Marketing and Operations Manager

Position Summary

The Swan Valley Stampeders Junior A Hockey Club is seeking a dynamic, organized, and motivated Marketing and Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day business operations, marketing initiatives, sponsorship development, fundraising activities, and game day experiences of the organization.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Marketing and Operations Manager plays a key leadership role in enhancing the club’s brand, generating revenue through sponsorship and advertising sales, engaging fans and community partners, and supporting the successful operation of the hockey club throughout the year.

This position requires a highly organized self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, possesses strong communication and relationship-building skills, and has a passion for hockey and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing and Communications

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive annual marketing plan in consultation with the Board of Directors.
  • Develop and maintain the club’s brand presence across all communication channels.
  • Manage and regularly update the team’s website, ensuring content remains accurate, current, and engaging.
  • Develop, implement, and manage all social media platforms, including content creation, scheduling, engagement, and promotion.
  • Collaborate with communications staff, photographers, media partners, and volunteers to produce content including social media posts, photography, videos, press releases, and promotional materials.
  • Promote team events, fundraising initiatives, hockey camps, community appearances, and special events.
  • Assist with the planning, organization, and execution of annual season ticket campaigns and promotional initiatives.

Sponsorship and Advertising Sales

  • Maintain and enhance a comprehensive corporate sponsorship program in consultation with the Board of Directors.
  • Identify, solicit, secure, and maintain sponsorship and advertising partnerships.
  • Create sponsorship and advertising packages that maximize value for partners and revenue for the organization.
  • Conduct regular sponsor follow-up meetings and maintain strong business relationships throughout the year.
  • Prepare sponsorship progress reports for presentation at Board meetings.
  • Manage all aspects of corporate advertising sales, including package creation, sales, invoicing, collections, fulfillment, and renewals.
  • Oversee game day sponsorship activations and ensure all sponsor commitments are fulfilled.

Operations and Administration

  • Oversee the daily business operations of the hockey club.
  • Attend monthly Board of Directors meetings.
  • Attend league meetings as required.
  • Assist the Board of Directors with organizational planning and strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinate team information requests and serve as a primary point of contact for external inquiries.
  • Maintain accurate records related to sponsorships, advertising, fundraising, and business operations.
  • Assist with basic bookkeeping functions including billing, invoicing, collections, and financial tracking.

Fundraising and Revenue Generation

  • Coordinate and oversee fundraising initiatives from planning through execution.
  • Manage lottery licensing applications and compliance requirements.
  • Coordinate fundraising ticket distribution, tracking, reporting, and reconciliation.
  • Oversee the club’s 50/50 program, including licensing, setup, promotion, and game day operations.
  • Identify and develop new fundraising and revenue-generating opportunities.

Game Day and Event Operations

  • Manage game day sponsorship fulfillment, special game nights and promotional activities.
  • Coordinate ticketing-related promotions and initiatives.
  • Organize and execute game day entertainment and fan engagement activities.
  • Plan and oversee intermission contests, promotions, and special events.
  • Attend all home games, team functions, community events, and fundraising activities as required.
  • Assist with game day and event setup, operations, and volunteer coordination.

Community Relations and Volunteer Management

  • Coordinate team community appearances, volunteer commitments, and outreach initiatives.
  • Foster positive relationships with community organizations, sponsors, fans, media, and stakeholders.
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, and retention of volunteers.
  • Support the Board of Directors and coaching staff in community engagement efforts.

Hockey Operations Support

  • Assist coaching staff with the planning, promotion, and administration of hockey camps, hockey schools, conditioning camps, and spring programs.
  • Provide operational support for team events and player-related activities as required.

Qualifications and Assets

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Post-secondary education in Marketing, Business Administration, Communications, Sport Management, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience in marketing, sponsorship sales, business operations, event management, or sports administration.
  • Strong understanding of marketing, sales, and customer relationship management.
  • Experience managing social media platforms and website content.
  • Basic bookkeeping knowledge, including billing and collections.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency with computers and common business software applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Passion for hockey and community involvement.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and game days.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the local business community, along with established relationships with local businesses, community organizations, and stakeholders, would be considered a strong asset.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time position that requires a flexible schedule to accommodate games, events, league meetings, fundraising activities, and community appearances. Evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required throughout the hockey season.
