Stampeders win third straight in 6-3 win over Terriers
The Stampeders have arrived. In a full 60 minute effort, Swan was able to double up the Portage Terriers on Saturday night for their third straight victory.
The game began in a flash, as Ethan MacTavish quickly opened the scoring to make it 1-0 just 1:10 into the first period. MacTavish would score yet again late in the first period to make it 2-0 and throw the Terriers into a corner.
The Terriers would make a goaltending change in Ryan Velan for Donovan Bodnar at the start of the second, and quickly found themselves on the board, as Edward Knittig cut the lead in half. Adam Belzil was able to tie the game about 8 minutes later on a penalty shot to make things interesting. However, the Stampeders were fortunate to get a bounce, as Crosby Harrison threw the puck to the middle, going off a Terrier stick and into the net for a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
The third period had it all, big saves and some great goals, as Nathan Hayes picked up a loose puck in the defensive zone and scored on the breakaway to make it 4-2. Trace Langan would then make it 5-2 by scoring into the empty net, but Portage wouldn’t give up easy, as they made it 5-3 thanks to Ben Bugeaud. The late comeback as too little too late, as Ethan MacTavish would complete the hat-trick to seal a 6-3 win.
The Stampeders have now won three in a row and improve their record to 4-8-0-0 which is good enough for third in the MGEU West Division. Sam Bastien got his second win of the season, making 30/33 saves on the night.
The Stampeders will rest up and get ready for the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Tuesday, Oct. 21 for a 7:30 puck drop. They’ll then welcome the Winkler Flyers to town for a two game set on Friday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 25, both of those games are at 7 pm inside of the SRCA.
