It’s time for another Three Stars of the Week, which is brought to you by Paull Funeral Home and Crematorium. Every Monday we will be awarding three players who had a big week and giving them stars. We will be doing this week-to-week with points accumulating throughout the season. The top three will players will be recognized and presented an award during our final home game of the season.
The Swan Valley Stampeders improved their overall record to 18-17-1-3 this past weekend in Neepawa picking up another three points. Swan Valley lost 7-6 in overtime Friday night then followed that up with a dominating 5-1 win. Saturday night’s contest was the first time the Stampeders held the Titans to just one goal against, a testament to the Stampeders’ solid defensive play and solid goaltending.
Neepawa jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead Friday night at the Madhouse on Mountain and stunned the Stampeders. Swan Valley found a way back into the game in the second period scoring four straight goals, (natural hat-trick by Carter Cockburn), to give them a comfortable lead right? Wrong, the Titans battled back to take a 6-5 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the game. The Stampeders were able to tie the game with less than two minutes left in the third to send it to overtime but it was Cameron Trimble who played hero and the Titans skated to a wild 7-6 win.
The Stampeders had a massive bounce-back game Saturday defeating the Titans 5-1. Swan was able to shut down any offence the Titans came at them with and completely disrupted their attacks. So much so that the Stampeders only allowed 19 shots on net, one of which ended up behind Kobe Grant late in the third period.
Swan Valley will need to continue this solid play into this week as they take on the top two teams in the West Division. The Dauphin Kings will be in town Wednesday, Feb. 2 and then the Stampeders travel south to face the Waywayseecappo Wolverines Friday night with a return game at home Saturday, Feb. 5.
Three stars point system is as follows:
1st Star = 3 points
2nd Star = 2 points
3rd Star = 1 point
Check back every Monday for the Paull Funeral Home & Crematorium, Three Stars of the week.
