The Swan Valley Stampeders made most of the #MJHLPunditsPickEm look bad Friday night as they earned their second win of the 2023/24 season, defeating the Waywayseecappo Wolverines 6-3.
Swan Valleys offence was led by Alex Walicki (1G, 2A), Jakob Jones (1G, 1A), and Trey Sauder (1G, 1A), while Liam Vanderkooi stopped 39 of 42 shots he faced for his first MJHL win.
The Wolverines opened the scoring Friday night, using the Stampeder defender as a screen, Luke McCarthy wired one past Vanderkooi four minutes into the game. Josh Danis answered back for the Stamps, driving the net and deflecting home his second of the year less than two minutes later. Wayway regained the lead three minutes later as Neo Kiemeney added his fourth of the season on a turnover at the side of the Stampeder net. Riley Fequet tied the game 2-2, scoring his first MJHL goal at 16:52.
Landen Gulutzan gave the Stampeders their first lead of the game, depositing a rebound 1:15 into the second period. Jakob Jones finally found the back of the net, scoring on a short-handed, 2-on-1 break two minutes later.
Alex Walicki added to the Stampeders lead, scoring through the 5-hole on a breakaway 5:27 into the third period. Jesiah Bennett scored his fourth of the season at 6:54 but it wasn’t enough as Trey Sauder deposited an empty net goal at 19:59 and the Stampeders skated to a 6-3 win.
