Stampeders Extend Win Streak, Beating Selkirk 3-2 Friday Night

The Swan Valley Stampeders extended their point streak to five games with a 3-2 win over Selkirk Friday night.

The opening ten minutes of tonight’s contest was mostly one sided as the Stampeders out played, and outshot the Steelers 5-2.  It was back-to-back penalties that changed momentum in Selkirk’s favour. Caiden Gault would score on a 5-on-3 power play at 13:07, picking up his 14th of the year. Blake Burr would score fifty one seconds later and the Steelers held a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes of play. Shots were 19-9 in favour of Selkirk.

The Stampeders offence was on full display in the middle frame, pushing the play for the majority of the period, and only allowing four shots on goal. Swan would score back-to-back goals early in the middle frame to tie the game at 2. Parker Johnson cut into the Steelers lead 2:27 into the second period, cleaning up his own rebound on a breakaway for his sixth of the year. Trevor Schroder would tie the game, walking out front and firing home his 12th of the year at 3:38. Tommy Cardinal would score his 10th of the year on the power play at 14:25, giving the Stampeders their first lead of the game. After forty minutes of play the Stampeders lead 3-2. The shots after the second were 32-23 in favour of Swan.

The third period had no scoring but was exciting hockey. Selkirk pressed hard throughout the period by Mikael Foucher stood tall in the Stampeder net, backstopping his team to their 20th win of the season.

Their record has now improved to 20-10-3, and sit in 3rd place overall in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Standings.
