The Swan Valley Stampeders held their 20th Anniversary home opener Saturday night against the OCN Blizzard in front of 518 faithful fans.
The Stampeders Josh Maucieri opened the scoring at 15:45 as he beat Wesley Ellingsen low blocker side off the rush. Captain Jaden Townsend picked up his first of the year at 18:57. Stamps goaltender Michael Davis stood on his head in the first period keeping the score 2-0 heading into the intermission. Shots after twenty minutes of play were 10-4 in favour of Swan.
Swan River’s Josh Tripp added to the Stamps lead at 13:48 of the middle frame. OCN’s Trygve Many-Gunns got the Blizzard on the board at 19:32 and the Stamps held a 3-1 lead after forty minutes of play. Shots were 26-14 in favour of Swan Valley.
OCN cut into the lead as Tony Apetagon pulled the Blizzard within one just forty one seconds into the third period. Jakob Besnilian scored an absolute beauty at 4:13 which moved the Stampeders ahead by two. Jaden Townsend sealed the win with an empty net goal at 19:24 and the Stampeders went on to win 5-2. The final shots on goal 38-21 for the Stampeders. The Stampeders are now 2-0 to kick off their 20th year.
The Swan Valley Stampders will look to go 3-0 Tuesday night when they travel to Virden to face off against the Oil Capitals. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm. Catch all the action live on HockeyTV.com
