Swan Valley Star and Times – Weekly Roundup

Stampeders continue road-trip this Friday in Selkirk, follow up in Winnipeg on Saturday

After a crazy weekend of ups and downs, the Stampeders look to rebound after the tough loss in Dauphin with a trip down South to Selkirk and Winnipeg as they face the Steelers (Sept. 26) and Blues (Sept. 27).

The Steelers began their season with games against the newly branded Winnipeg Monarchs, defeating them both times over the weekend by scores of 7-1 and 9-2, taking advantage of the young Monarchs and using their depth to dominate in both games. Three of the Steelers had seven points in the first two games, with 11 players having at-least one point. If the Stampeders want to get two-points, they’ll have to have lock down defence and nearly no mistakes, because this Steelers team can jump on them in a flash.

The Winnipeg Blues played in only one game this past weekend, falling to the Niverville Nighthawks 5-2. However, the Blues bring in a great looking team of returnees. The Blues are tenacious and can be tough to play against, just check out the penalty minutes in their game against the Nighthawks. Despite falling to Niverville, the Blues outshot the Nighthawks 43-38 and won’t go away easily against anyone else. The Stampeders will have to make sure they stay disciplined and not lay back against the Blues.

With the Stampeders sitting with a 1-1-0-0 record, they’ll have to play a full 60 minutes against both the Steelers and Blues this coming weekend, if they want 4 points. All of the points from now until March matter dearly for all teams, but maybe a tiny bit more in the MGEU West Division, with all 5 teams that played over the weekend going 1-1.

The Stampeders will end their road-trip in Waywayseecappo on Tuesday, Sept. 30 before heading home and welcoming the Virden Oil Capitals on Friday, Oct. 3.
