Swan Valley Star & Times – Weekly Roundup

Stampeders begin three game set on Tuesday

The Swan Valley Stampeders will play their first three game week this week as they begin their set against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines tomorrow night in Waywayseecappo at 7:30 pm, before heading home and welcoming the Virden Oil Capitals for a home and home, which go down Friday in Swan at 7 pm, and Saturday in Virden at 7:30 pm.

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines have started their season well, winning twice and losing twice. The wins come against the Oil Caps, and the Neepawa Titans, their losses have come against the Oil Caps as well and Winkler Flyers. Led by leading scorer Ben Roulette, the Stampeders will have their hands full with a Wolverines team who is hungry to prove that their legit this year.

The Virden Oil Capitals are in the same boat, as they’re led by Bryce Bryant, whose been one of their most consistent scoring forwards in the last couple of seasons. They’ve beaten the Wolverines and Winnipeg Monarchs, but have lost to the Wolverines and Niverville Nighthawks. Both teams can be lethal when in the offensive zone and will cause havoc when presented the opportunity.

The Stampeders have shown that they can score, but have not yet shown that they can keep the puck out of their own net, as they have given up 23 goals in their first four games of the year, while scoring 13, which is currently tied for second in the MGEU West Division. If they want to have a chance in these three games, they’ll have to stay out of the penalty box and give their goaltenders some support.

Though it is early in the season, and slow starts are evident during this time of the year, the Stampeders cannot afford to dig themselves into a hole to start the season, especially against division rivals when these games will matter in January and February.
