THREE STARS OF THE WEEK

The Swan Valley Stampeders won their only game they played in last week, downing the Winkler Flyers 3-2 Saturday night. 

The team continues to string together wins, pushing their latest win streak to six games. The win Saturday improves the Stampeders record to 35-10-3-2, good for second place in the MJHL. 

Swan Valley held onto the number 1 spot in the Subway MJHL Power Rankings, and continues to hold down the number 11 spot in the weekly top 20 CJHL rankings.  

The “Three Stars of the Week” is brought to you by Paull Funeral Home & Crematorium, and will be awarded week-to-week with points being collected throughout the remainder of the year. The top three will players will be recognized at the end of the year. 

Three stars point system is as follows:

1st Star = 3 points

2nd Star = 2 points

3rd Star = 1 point

Merek Pipes who’s committed to play Division 1 hockey with the Union Dutchmen continues to be rock solid in the Stampeder net. 

The 20-year-old put up yet another impressive performance against the Winkler Flyers Saturday February 9th. The Cobble Hill, BC native stopped 25/27 shots and posted a 0.926 SV%. 

The 20-year-old sits 2nd in the league with a SV% of 0.931 and a GAA of 2.24 in 25 games played with the Stampeders.  

2nd Star

Dane Hirst continues to be impressive on the Stampeders blue-line. The 6’2” 190 lbs defenceman had a very solid outing Saturday, as he found the score sheet twice. 

The Lac du Bonnet, MB native picked up two assists in a 3-2 win over Winkler in front of a massive crowd Saturday in Swan River. 

The 19-year-old has two goals this season, adding 34 assists for 36 points in 47 games. 

1st Star

Josh Maucieri has been turning heads as of late, as the 6’2” 181 lbs forward has been finding the score sheet. 

The Crosby, MN, USA product added some timely offence Saturday, picking up a goal and an assist against Winkler. 

The 19-year old has scored 14 goals, adding 19 assists for 33 points in 48 games with the Stampeders. 

The Stampeders will be back in action this weekend hosting a pair of games at the Centennial Arena. Portage Friday Feb 15th (Kinsmen Guaranteed 50/50 $1000) and Waywayseecappo Saturday Feb 16th (Westwood Inn guaranteed 50/50 $1000). Puck drop both nights is 7:30p.m. Tickets are available at Atkinson’s Sports Excellence or at the door.
